Different types of wedding jewelleries
Which type of wedding jewelry that is trendy varies from year to year.
Sometimes it should be discreet. Another year, big and eye-catching jewelry applies. Usually, the jewelry matches the bridal bouquet and dress. This applies to both the bride and bridegroom.

The traditional couple are probably looking for a simple but elegant decoration. Pearls in white or pink is always right for the bride and for the bridegroom a pair of beautiful cufflinks or a handsome bracelet chain, is perfect.

Gold is still the most common in terms of engagement and wedding rings. If you can afford it, it is possible to design your own rings.

It is important to choose jewelry according to your personality. Maybe a pair of earrings that you once got from your grandmother matches a newly purchased necklace.

Perhaps you want a tiara in your hair? There are many beautiful tiaras in gold and silver with pearls and precious stones. Or why not a beautiful veil studded with pearls or crystals.

Do not forget to choose wedding jewelleries for your bridesmaids and pages.

Fitness tips for the bridal couple
Your big day is approaching and you do not want to miss one moment of it.
The weeks leading up to your wedding day can be one big blur of stress with a million tasks on your to-do list. It is no time to run out of steam. Make the time to give your body and mind a chance to rest and rejuvenate.

Eat three meals a day, drink a lot of water and sleep at least eight hours a day!

Exercise! Twenty minutes of exercise a day will do wonders. Take a walk every day. Run the stairs insted of taking the elevator. Grab your spouse-to-be and practice your wedding dance.

Take hot baths, face- and body treatments and massage

Hair accessories
Complete your wedding outfit with a crown, tiara, veil or other hair accessories.
Crown
It has become more common to wear a crown. If you do not want to buy a crown, perhaps you can borrow it from your church.

Tiara
A tiara can be decorated with beads, satin flowers, fresh flowers, rhinestones etc. You can also make a tiara yourself with steel wires and beads. A tiara can be worn together with or without a veil.

Flowers
Fresh flowers are a great way to lend a romantic, feminine look to your hair. You can adorn your hair with flowers that matches the bridal bouquet, pin them into your hair, place them around your head or attach them to the veil.

Veil
Veils exist in many different types and lengths. There are veils that hide the face and are folded up or taken off after the wedding. Which veil one chooses depends a lot of on the hairstyle. If the veil is affixed on the top of the head, a lot of the hairstyle will be hidden.

When you choose the veil it is the important to consider your face shape and also your body type. Moreover, it is important that the veil matches your bridal gown and the theme of your wedding.

Ask some of your married friends when they first felt that they were a-bride-to-be, and they will probably say that it was when they affixed the veil to their hair. It is something special with this thin fabric that makes you change to a bride.

How to dress up to a bride
Does the wedding gown fit? What is important to remember when you walk the stairs or when you are sitting in a chair.

Your make up and wedding hair must be set before you put on your wedding gown. Slip into it without your shoes. Adjust the gown to fit the bust, shoulder, arms, waist and hips.
Remember, if the gown is very long and also very wide and your hair has extra volume this day, you will take up some extra space.  If your wedding gown has a long skirt, remember to lift it up when you walk the stairs. Lift the bottom of the skirt when you sit down.

If the weather is cold, put on some warm underwear.

If you are wearing gloves, you only take them off when you are eating and drinking.

Take care of your wedding gown. Look out for thorny bushes and trees, sharp edges of furniture, cars etc. avoiding scratches in the fabric. Check the bridal bouquet so it does not leak. Water can make awful spots on the wedding gown.

Enjoy you wedding gown and your big day!

Make-up
Your wedding day make-up should match you wedding gown and the gravity of the situation.
Think seriously about hiring a make-up artist for your big day!

Be sure your skin is clean before you put on the make-up, to get the best result. Start with the foundation, which should be so perfectly matched to your skin tone that it disappears.

Use a blush to highlight your features.

The colour on your lips is important. A strong colour put focus on your lips and a little more natural colour put focus on your eyes. Be sure to carry your lipstick with you for touchups.

The most important in your face is your eyes. Big sparkling eyes always get attention. Do not wear too much eye make-up. Apply concealer to banish dark circles under your eyes. Remember to use matte eye shadows as they will not reflect light or look too shiny. This is also important to remember to get your pictures perfect.

Wear at least two layers of mascara (that is waterproof and withstands tears!) and use an eyelash curler before applying the mascara.

Do not use black or brown eyeliner, as they look too severe.

Define your brows with a pencil or powder that matches your hair colour.

Pearls
Pearls are always right for the bride.
There are three kinds of pearls: natural, cultured, and imitation.

Natural pearls are formed when a foreign object (usually a grain of sand) enters the body of the oyster. The oyster protects itself by secreting layers around the irritant for two or three years. Natural pearls of good quality are extremely exceptional. It goes about 50-60 oysters on one pearl, and the quality is often not good enough.

Natural oriental pearls are caught on pearl banks in the Persian Gulf, in India, Sri Lanka and outside Burma, and natural freshwater pearls are caught in USA, Scotland and Austria.

Cultured pearls are formed with the same process as natural pearls, but humans insert the foreign object into the oyster instead. Most cultivated pearls are formed in Japan. The method still used today, originates from the Japanese men Mise and Nishigawa. It takes about two to three years to cultivate a pearl.

Pearls exist in many different colours. From white, yellow, golden, pink, blue and black and almost all scales in between. The pink/blue is considered to be the most excellent, and of course the most expensive. The price increases the thicker shell. Remember, it is the pearl’s colour and shine that counts.

There are three groups of cultivated beads:
Pearls formed in the Akoya oyster
Pearls formed in the South Sea
Pearls formed in fresh waters

Imitation pearls are made by glass, plastic, and wax dipped in a solution of pearl essence.

Take good care of your pearls
- Keep your pearls in a jewellery box wrapped in a cloth of linen
- Unthread your pearls sometimes
- Clean you pearls with a cloth of linen
- Never put your pearls in a cold place, they can crack!

Is the pearl natural or imitated?

A natural pearl is rough to your teeth, and an imitated smooth. Natural pearls are cool to your skin, while imitated are oily. A natural pearl’s surface is not damaged if you scrape it with a knife.

Preserving the bridal gown
You want the bridal gown to be beautiful for many, many years – what shall you think of?
Your bridal gown is a beautiful memory from the most important day of your life. You want the gown to retain its beauty as long as possible.

Most gowns can be cleaned by hand. If your gown is made of silk, or if there are stains on your gown of red wine, perfume or grass, you must take it to the dry cleaner.

Suspend the bridal gown in your closet on a padded hanger. Use silk paper to avoid winkles on your gown. Preserve the bridal gown in a cool, dry and safe place. You can also keep the dress lying.

You must not use plastics to preserve the bridal gown. Neither, is it advisable to preserve the bridal gown in your cellar. There is a huge risk that the moisture forms moulds on the gown.

Unavoidable, the bridal gown will turn yellow as years go by. Time sets its patina also on bridal gowns.

The bride’s gloves
What can be more sophisticated than a long pair of white gloves together with your wedding gown, just like the ones worn by Audrey Hepurn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s?
Gloves that extend to the upper part of the bicep look wonderful together with sleeveless and strapless gowns. But if your gown has long sleeves it is most beautiful with short gloves or perhaps no gloves at all.

The rings are not carried outside the gloves. During the ceremony you will need to expose your ring finger at some point. You can make a slit on the glove’s ring finger, then slide your finger out. Be sure to tuck in the loose material inside the palm. You can also, of course, remove your gloves during the ceremony and hand them over to your maid. A very practice alternative is to wear a fingerless glove, either short or long. These gloves are often embroidered on the upper side of the hand.

You leave the gloves off in the receiving line and while eating and drinking during the reception.

Pay attention to the bridal bouquet, it can leave marks on the glove

The wedding gown
Below some tips to follow when you choose the gown, new or second-hand, the price, the payment, any alterations etc.
Choose the style of the gown
If you are planning a wedding in the morning it is quite common to choose a short gown or a suit costume. In the afternoon a long gown is most common. Accessories can be a veil, flowers in your hair or a tiara etc. The offer of wedding gowns is huge.

Gown-buying
Shopping for your gown is sure to be an exhilarating, exciting and overwhelming experience. But remember following:

How much does it cost?
Ask for a written receipt. What is included in the price? Are eventual alterations included? You have decided to buy a second-hand gown. Again it is important to ask for a written receipt. Perhaps the gown needs to be washed. Is it included in the price? If it is damaged when washing it, who will pay for this?

Payment
Settle the amount of deposit and date for final payment.

Delivery date
Schedule a day and time to pick up your gown from the salon. Do not forget to try it on one last time!

Most likely the wedding gown fits perfect and you can look forward to your wedding.

Fabrics for the wedding gown
You want a gown that drapes you beautifully. But what fabric is best for your wedding gown? Brocade, chiffon, satin – fabrics you have heard about, but perhaps you do not know what they mean.
Brocade
(It. Broccare, broccato = decorate)
Brocade exists in many different qualities, woven in a Jacquard-machine in complicated designs. Normally it is woven in raw silk, but you can also find variants in cotton, polyester and viscose. The design is often in different colours on a one-coloured bottom and has a dim or blank gloss. Earlier it was common with gold- or silver threads in the material.

Chiffon

(Fr. the word for rag)
A delicate, sheer and transparent material made from silk or rayon. It is popular for overskirts, sheer sleeves, under wears and wraps.

Duchesse satin

It is woven in silk and rayon into a satin finish. It is very popular for elegant dresses.

Embroidered edging

Most often an entire embroidered cotton fabric that also has holes and uneven edging.

Lace
Laces are made in linen, silk or cotton. The most excellent laces are made in Italy.

Moire

Moire is a heavy silk taffeta, with subtle wavy design, which occurs when the fabric is pressed between hot metal drums.

Organza
Organza is a transparent, stiff and shimmering material. Originally made of silk but can also be woven in rayon. Organza is used in wide, charming dresses, sometimes embroidered.

Satin
A heavy, smooth material with a high sheen on one side and drapes you beautifully. It is undoubtedly the most sought-after and cherished wedding dress material.

Shantung
Shantung is similar to raw silk, but with a rubbed texture.

Taffeta
Crisp and smooth, with a slight rib.

Tulle

Netting made of silk, nylon or rayon. Tulle is sheer and transparent and used primarily for skirts and veils.

Groom’s wear
You have not decided yet what to wear? Below follows some suggestions.
Tuxedo (or dinner jacket)
Tuxedo is the most common outfit at religious weddings. It consists of a dinner jacket, a white dress shirt, black trousers, a black bow tie, and either a cummerbund or a waistcoat.
Traditionally worn as a semi-formal evening dress.

Jaquette
Another elegant alternative is the jaquette. The jaquette reminds of the dress suit, but instead of the bow tie you wear a necktie or a scarf, and grey trousers with black stripes.

Suit
It is always right with a suit, especially at a civil ceremony.

Shoes
Only black shoes do. If you do not want to buy special tuxedo shoes, your best pair of black shoes – skinned to perfection – will do.

Hosiery
You are not limited to nude, ivory, or white hoses.
Your wedding day is not a time to sacrifice comfort to style. Get the right size, shape and style of hosiery for your body. Do not wear anything you have never tried before. Try them standing and sitting. Remember that you are going to be in that ensemble for a minimum of five hours.

Will you be wearing a sandal? You will need a sandalfoot hose. These have sheer toes and not reinforced ones.

Keep two or even three extra pairs of hosiery on hand.

Lingerie
You have found your dream gown and now you will need to buy lingerie.
Bra
You will need a good, supportive bra to lift you up as you walk down the aisle and keep you comfortable for hours. Make comfort your priority. Does your gown have a low- or wide-cut neckline, skinny little straps, backless, or strapless style? It is important that the bra fits perfect to it.

Slimmer
A slimmer is characterised by a close, contoured fit and extending past the waistline over the hips. It usually, though not always, has brassiere cups and detachable garters. It is important that it makes you feel comfortable the whole wedding day. Pay special attention to your décolletage and back. If you wear a thin and tight-fitting gown a smooth flesh-coloured slimmer fits best.

Panties
Choose panties that offer comfort over sex appeal. You can also use pantyhose with built-in underwear, if your gown is made of very thin material.

Hosiery
If you want to wear a garter, you will need to test it out to make sure you can bear it all day long. An alternative is to wear stay ups.

Make sure your undergarments will not be seen trough your gown!

Manicure
Your hands will be in focus on your wedding day. Everybody wants to look at your wedding rings. Of course you want you hands and nails to be perfect on this day. If you are a nail-biter, now is the perfect time to stop that bad habit.
Your hands will be in focus on your wedding day. Everybody wants to look at your wedding rings. Of course you want you hands and nails to be perfect on this day. If you are a nail-biter, now is the perfect time to stop that bad habit.
Apply hand cream to prevent dry, cracking skin. The softer your hands are, the more resistant they will be against weather and wind.

Nail and hairs consist of dead skin cells that grow from the skin. The keratin ties the cells together. A nail grows approximately ½ centimeters per month. Start getting weekly manicures about three months before your wedding day, to get your hands in top form.

Your nails should be treated carefully. Steel files or other sharp objects may not be used. When you file, start at one edge and move across the top in one fluid motion.

Apply a base coat to each nail. Then paint two coats of the nail colour.

Remember to use gloves then you do the dishes or wash up. Washing detergents are not good for your hands and nails.

Nail polish protects the nail and makes it stronger.

Protect your nails and do not use them as tools. Use the end of a pencil to dial the phone.

Manicure
  • - Remove old polish with nail polish remover and cotton
  • - File the nails carefully
  • - Apply hand cream to your hands and nails
  • - Dry your hands carefully with a clean towel
  • - Apply the base coat to each nail
  • - Paint two coats of nail colour
  • - When the polish has dried, apply a top coat

French manicure
French manicure is very beautiful, if you want an unpainted look. Paint the tip of the nail with white nail polish. Then paint coats of a pink or beige colour over the whole nail. Practice a couple of times before the wedding day.

Decorated nails
To decorate one or more nails with beads, rhinestones, etc can be gorgeous.

Use the same nail polish for both your finger- and toenail.

Pedicure
Are you planning your wedding? Perhaps you will wear open-toed shoes.
The feet are unfortunately a part of our body we often forget. Give your feet 15 minutes care per week, and your feet will become soft and smooth.

Fill a bowl with warm water and add a special footbath product to soften skin. Immerse your feet for at least ten minutes. Scrub your feet with a pumice-stone and use an exfoliating lotion. Dry your feet with a clean towel. Pay careful attention between the toes. Then apply a moisturizing foot cream and put on a pair of socks to let the lotion absorb.

A tip: Lemon makes your feet soft, and is a good help against crevices and bacteria between the toes.

Use a scrubbing cream and then rinse it off with water.

Cut the toe nails straight across. Remember not to cut the nails too short, as they function as a protection for the toe.

Apply a base coat and then two coats of nail colour. At last you apply the topcoat.

Foot massage is wonderful. Perhaps your partner can give you one?

Take care of your feet:

  • - The will carry you approximately 10.000 kilometres during your lifetime.
  • - High heeled and thin soles in tight material is torture for your feet
  • - Feet are very delicate with more than 70.000 nerve threads
  • - Vitamins A, B and D are good for the toenails
  • - Let your feet breath at least one hour a day

Even if your toes will not show when you walk down the aisle, you will want to have soft feet and perfectly painted toenails on your wedding night and honeymoon.

The bride's shoes
High-heeled or not on the wedding shoes? White or coloured shoes?
Your wedding shoes are a very important detail to the wedding outfit. Which type of shoe fits you best: pumps, high-heeled sandals, slip in etc. If you are not used to wear high-heeled shoes, it is probably not such a good idea to choose it for your wedding-day. If your shoes are not comfortable it can affect your body and carriage.

Walk a mile in your shoes before the wedding, to avoid sores on your feet!

Many brides wear cloth shoes, because they often dye their shoes to match their gowns. There are a lot of beautiful styles of wedding shoes made in cloth. But of course, you can wear shoes in other material also, such as leather. Comfort is the key when it comes to wedding shoes!

You must not have white wedding shoes. Red shoes in silk together with a cream coloured bridal gown looks gorgeous. Or you find a pair of shoes in the same colour as your bridal bouquet.

You can also decorate your shoes with laces, beads, rhinestones e

The bride’s purse
The lipstick, the powder compact, the perfume bottle, the handkerchief for the blessing tears, the key to the hotel room – there are a lot of necessary things that you need to have. But the bridegroom’s pockets are not a good place.

This is your big day and you should not forget your purse. Of course, it is not equally important as the dress, the veil, the wedding rings and the shoes. But a charming bride ensures that the purse is not too far away on this important day.

On your wedding day you will need to improve your lipstick, perhaps put on little more powder and scent. Moreover, there is a big risk that you need to dry away some blessing tears, when all excitement releases after all planning and the big day finally has arrived.

Your purse should be just as special as everything else on your wedding day and match the grown. What kind of purse do you want to have? Why not a purse of satin with roses of organza, a bead purse, a beaded satin purse, an embroidered purse etc.

There are a huge number of delicious, handsome and romantic purses. Choose your purse thoroughly, because it will forever have a special place in your heart.

Do not forget your bridesmaids! They also need a purse for necessary things. Their purses should match you own.

The wedding hairstyles
There are many gorgeous wedding hairstyles to choose among. Scour fashion magazines, discuss alternatives with your hairdresser or ask your friends for advice, which hairstyles fit you best.

The bride’s hairstyle should complement her gown, not compete with it. It is important that both your hairstyles match your wedding gowns and the style of your wedding.

The most important aspect of a bride’s hair is shine! Use a moisturizing conditioner before you begin styling, and then use a shining serum or spray to add gloss.

Short hair
Not all brides have long hair. Short hair is pretty and sophisticated and can be just as bridal as long hair.

Attach a comb, a flower, or a crown to make you hairstyle look more beautiful. Consult your hairdresser for advice. Different hair accessories can be bought in most wedding shops. You can also look for combs and barrettes in antique shops and flea markets.

Fresh flowers are a great way to lend a romantic, feminine look to short hair. Attach them to the veil, or place them around your head. If you are planning to wear flowers in your hair, make sure they match the bridal bouquet.

Why not wear a hat? It looks wonderful on short hair.

Long hair
If you have decided to wear your hair up, there are many wonderful updos you can do. Perhaps Chignon – a tight knot at the base of the head, French Braid – three-stranded braid woven close to the head, Bun – a ponytail wrapped around itself.

Why not pin up the front half of the head and let the rest hang down the back.

You can also wear your long hair loose with soft waves and curls.

Whatever you decide, find something that suits you and the overall style of your dress and the wedding.
