Can I conceive with a hypoplastic uterus?

Answered by: Ongeorge medical services,Idimu- ikotun road, Lagos, Nigeria

Q. I am 30 years old female, married for the last year and a half. Before marriage, I used to have irregular periods, which got regularised after treatment. However, after marriage the problem of irregular periods surfaced again. Then I had a pelvic scanning, which indicated hypoplastic uterus and bilateral small sized ovaries. My husband also has a very low sperm count. The doctor initially asked me to take Trito for periods, but these days, I do not get my periods even after taking this tablet. Can I ever conceive?

A.  Hypoplastic uterus can be corrected with hysteroscopic uretroplasty but as you have stopped having periods now we will have to assay your hormones like FSH, LH and Oestradiol levels. If the values suggest that you can be stimulated to have periods and ovulate then there is a role for this surgery. If values of your hormones suggest that you have developed ovarian failure then the options for you are either to take a donor egg, opt for a surrogate mother or adoption.

Is it possible for me to conceive?

Q. I am a 33 years old woman, and I underwent a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) test, which show blocked fallopian tubes. I have taken placentrax injections on alternate days for two months. Can I conceive?

A.  No it is not possible. If the tubes are blocked, they need a surgery to open them, or pregnancy can be achieved by the IVF/Test tube baby technique, depending on all factors taken into account especially the site, number, type and cause of tubal damage. Associated disease, sperm factors and ovulation as well.

What causes pain during pregnancy and how can it be managed?

Q. My 30 years old wife is in to her nineteenth week of pregnancy with twins. Yesterday, she felt some pain. We consulted a doctor who asked her to take Nidagen 200, Duvadilan retard and Perizole. She took all the medicines. Is she on right treatment for her pain? Does prescribed medication affects pregnancy outcome?

A.  The commonest cause for pain in pregnancy is musculoskeletal pain (pain due to stretch of ligaments and muscles). There is no evidence that either of those medicines you wrote have any effect on the pregnancy outcome - that too at 19 weeks. I would therefore not recommend any medicine at all. Just take something like paracetamol for pain and on most occasions the pain will subside and the pregnancy will progress normally.
