General Interview Questions and Answers

Interview Questions start the minute the interview starts, sometimes it even start before you get into the interview room. Series of questions could be asked not just by the interviewer alone but also members of the panel. While some questions are typical or targeted to your qualification, experience, career interest and academic preparations, some are targeted to your personality, your mode of dressing and probably your family background. To show that you are an exceptional candidate, you need to be prepared to answer not only the typical questions, but also the unexpected job interview questions. Below are few general job interview questions that one should always expect from an interviewer



Tell me all about yourself or what can you tell me about yourself? This sometimes the most often asked question in job interviews. Your answer is expected to be very short and brief. You need to have a short statement prepared in your mind. Be wise and intelligent enough to understand that this is not a personal question try as much as possible to limit it to work-related items unless instructed otherwise. Talk about your experiences, previous jobs you have done and how much you contributed to the success of your previous occupation and also jobs you have held that are relate to the position you are being interviewed for. It is important you start from the very first job position you held to the most recent.

Why did you leave the last job? Don’t think of any positive answer; just stay positive regardless of the circumstances! Do not tell any lie or try to deny the mistakes you may have committed. Never refer to a major problem with management or staffs and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers or the organization. If you do this, you will blame yourself for it because your answer would be a clear evidence of you being a part of the failure since you were once a staff or management. Keep smiling and talk about leaving for a positive reason such as a better opportunity, a chance to do more meaningful and something special or other forward-looking reasons such as willingness to working a more competitive environment

What experience do you have in this field? Be elaborate and speak basically of the specific position you are applying for. If you don’t have any experienced, try to get as much close and elaborate experience you may have and how you can put it to work in such a way that it will have a link to the new job. Unless there’s absolutely none and the position does require an experience, then you are not qualified for the job

Do you have any questions for me?Always have some questions prepared before the interview. Also, as the interview progresses, your required to take note of certain questions that were not clear to you examples are:  Questions about where you will be an asset to the organization and how you can help. How soon will I be able to be productive? And what type of projects will I be able to assist on?

What have you done to improve your knowledge in the last year? Tell them a list of improvement activities as well as trainings you must have attended in last year. Your list should be linked to the job position you are applying for. A wide variety of activities can be explained as positive self-improvement. This is test to know if you have being doing some mental exercise after you lost your last job

What ability do you have to work under pressure? Just a brief explanation about how you have succeeded in working under some form of pressure in order to achieve certain goals. Give an example that closely related to the type of position applied for.

If you were hiring a person for this job, what would you look for? For this, you should be very optimistic to land the answers to their face. If there is anybody I can recommend for this job, I should rcommend some that has got all the skills and experience that I have got. Move on and mention traits, experienced and skills you have and are vita to the job position.
What is your philosophy towards work?Be precise and concise as well. A very short answer will do. The interviewer is not looking for a long or flowery dissertation here. Example: Do you have strong feelings that the job gets done? Yes. That’s the type of answer that works best here. A Short and positive answer, showing a plus benefit to the organization
Are you a team player? Use a ‘YES ANSWER’ you are, of course, a team player. Be specific and give good examples from your experiences. Your example should prove to them that you always working for the interest of the team and not for your own interest. Do not brag; just say it in a matter-of-factual tone! This is a key point.

What has been your biggest professional disappointment? Be sure that you refer to something that was beyond your control. Show acceptance and no negative feelings.

Tell me about a time when you helped resolve a dispute between others. Pick a specific incident. Concentrate on your problem solving technique and not the dispute you settled. Explain the methods applied in solving these problems and how it help to bring a lasting solution to the problem. Employers are pleased to know that you are a problem solver

What motivates you to do your best on the job? This question requires your own answer, tell them the truth about what truly motivates you to get your job best done…I will suggest you use good examples like: Challenges, Rewards, Achievement, and Recognition or promotion

How do you describe your management style? Try to avoid labels. Some of the more common labels, like progressive, salesman or consensus, can have several meanings or descriptions depending on which management expert you listen to. The situational style is safe, because it says you will manage according to the situation, instead of one size fits all.

What position do you prefer on a team working on a project? Be honest and speak trutfully. If you are comfortable in different roles, point them out and explain in brief.

How long would you expect to work for us if hired? It is not right to be specific; else you are giving them the impression that you are not going to stay if hired. Something like this should work: I’d like it to be here a long time; as much as you permit me and believe that I am doing a good job to remain in your company.

Why do you want to work for this organization? This is a very technical job interview question but quite easy to answer. It may take some careful thought and certainty, but let you answer be based on your research findings about the organization. Your sincerity is extremely important here and will easily be sensed by the interviewer. You must relate your answers or reasons to work with organization base on your long-term career goals.

What is more important to you: the money or the work? They are both very important but be very careful, do not go for the money with great passion rather have more passion for work than the money. Money is always important, but the work is the most important. There is no better answer.

If you had enough money to retire right now, would you? Be honest and answer yes if you would or No if you will not but since you need to work, this is the type of work you prefer. Do not say yes if you do not mean it. You also have to be careful too, you yes anwser may pass a different message which might make them see you as an opportunist.

Have you ever had to fire anyone, How did you feel about that? This is very serious a question. Do not create the impression like you enjoy firing people. At the same time do not pretend like you will not do it when it is indeed the right thing to do. When it comes to the organization versus the individual who has created a harmful situation, it is your duty to protect the organization. Remember firing is not the same as layoff or reduction in force.
Do you know anyone who works for us?To answer question of this sort one has to be a little bit careful because you may not want to mention anyone who has a bad record in the organization. It is also important that you should be aware of the company policy on relatives or friends working for the organization. This can affect your answer even though they asked about friends not relatives. Be careful to mention a friend only if they have good records in the company

What do you know about this organization? This question is very important and hardly do most interviewers omit to ask you this. You have at least background knowledge about the organization. It is imperative therefore to carry out research about the company before embarking on the interview, find out where they have been and where they are going, know what their current issues, problems and basic statistics are or share growth if any

If not, you can say it all depends on the details and responsibility of the job and then, you can mention a wide range.

What irritates you about co-workers?This is a trap question and the best answer is NO ANSWER. You accomplish this by pretending to think real hard but you must come up with nothing exactly that irritates you…A short statement that you seem to get along with folks is great!

What is your greatest strength? This is easy because you already know them; numerous answers are good, just stay positive. A few good examples are: Your ability to prioritize, your problem-solving skills, your ability to work under pressure, your ability to focus on projects, your professional expertise, your leadership skills, and your positive attitude.

It would take disloyalty to the organization, violence or lawbreaking to get you to object other people, especially those who you will be expected to work with. Minor objections will label you as a whiner, a fault finder or a complainer

Develop a poor memory about any trouble with a supervisor and skip the question …A good answer is I probably can’t remember any, or I think there was none.

Also, it is important to spend extra hours on a job if a goal is set for you. That way, you are sure to meet your target
Would you be willing to relocate if required? You should be clear on this with your family prior to the interview if you think there is a chance it may come up. Do not say yes just to get the job if the real answer is no. This can create a lot of problems later on in your career. Be honest at this point and save yourself future grief.
